At the very bottom of this painting is a grey band signifying the road. Moving up is the brown desert floor, then the black mountain range, and behind that, the pink signifies the heat of the atmosphere. THEN, the huge mountain behind all of this. Driving in the desert, it is easy to get visually stuck in studying the road (or staying on the road) and looking ahead at the horizon and where you are headed. Then, all of a sudden, there is a huge mountain or ridge that comes into view almost by accident. With a single side glance, you take in the enormous size of it, almost as a surprise and almost as if you could miss it if you hadn’t suddenly glanced over. I think this puts you into a new awareness of where you are and of your own scale. You could be an ant next to this mountain. Its power by size overtakes your whole visual field.
