"This work is an ode to the Southwest's numerous river canyons. After my week camping in the San Juans I hopped on a raft for a three day float down the Colorado River. These new works started with a couple of weeks spent camping and recreating high up in the San Juans last fall. With reference photos in tow, I have been creating new moments in the studio that combine hours and sometimes days of time into new singular compositions. The new works offer a familiar vantage point while beckoning the viewer into points unknown."
Joseph Toney’s illustrative painting style, marked by clean lines and transfixing patterns, results in beautiful caricatures of the natural surroundings that inspire it: mountains, animals, clouds, and waves.
