"This piece depicts changing landscapes from a journey leaving Ouray, heading up Yankee Boy Basin. These new works started with a couple of weeks spent camping and recreating high up in the San Juans last fall. With reference photos in tow, I have been creating new moments in the studio that combine hours and sometimes days of time into new singular compositions. The new works offer a familiar vantage point while beckoning the viewer into points unknown." Joseph Toney’s illustrative painting style, marked by clean lines and transfixing patterns, results in beautiful caricatures of the natural surroundings that inspire it: mountains, animals, clouds, and waves.
