"This work marks one of my first pieces since recovering from breast cancer. I have started sanding back into my paintings. It allows me to increase the glow under the paint and signifies a move into a newer direction. I'm inspired by David Smith, a sculptor who used a steel burnisher to create decorative marks on his sculptures in the 1960s. I am just beginning to explore this added mark making technique to my work. This is the first example of that." – Sylvia Benitez
