Shawna Moore, an encaustic artist based in Whitefish, MT, uses a dynamic technique that incorporates pigment and beeswax which is heated and applied to a wood substrate by layering. The surface is a visual record of selected memories. Moore considers her work as a diary of her own life experience and contemplative journey.

The encaustic medium inherently has the ability to reveal and obscure, creating mysterious surfaces and revealing depth within the use of line and color. Moore’s background in architecture (University of Oregon, 1983-89) and her continual exploration into the role of art and painting in purpose and place, have helped create a unique vision in her life and studio. She has been featured in numerous solo, group and invitational exhibitions.

"I make the kinds of artwork that I like to look at. When visiting galleries and museums, I am intrigued by art that I can’t quite figure out how it was made or how the artist came to such a simple and pure expression. That's what I aim for, technical prowess and a momentary capture of the sublime aspects of nature and my life as a thinking, feeling, creative person. The challenge is to grow and evolve as an artist. My focus is painting, not just encaustic painting.
