Ode to Lift 9

Brett Schreckengost

Curated by Allison Cannella
November 28 – December 31, 2022
Opening Reception | December 7, 5-8pm

Telluride Ski Resort installed Lift 9 in 1985. This past summer, Telski began work to replace the slow-moving chair with a speedier, more energy efficient lift. Many are excited to welcome the new lift, but Telluride will not soon forget the original ride. “Ode to Lift 9” pays tribute to the special memories associated with Lift 9 by featuring a collection of Brett Schreckengost’s stunning photography.

Several images in the exhibition were taken from the air. “Inversion,” taken from a helicopter, shows a unique view of the ski area with a rare full valley cloud inversion obscuring the town of Telluride. “San Sophia,” also shot from the air, contrasts the groomed runs of Lift 9 with the wild and jagged San Sophia ridgeline.

Other images, such as “Plunge Powder” and “Morning Glass,” celebrate the sport by capturing local skiers and snowboarders indulging in fresh snow. Thanks to his relationship with Telski, Brett is given special access that allows him to masterfully record these impressive moments.

Finally, Brett’s work commemorates landmarks of Lift 9 that are no longer. “Top of the World” depicts a snowy view of the cherished ski-shack at the top of the lift that is due for
replacement. “Giuseppe’s” fondly remembers the long-standing restaurant that was torn down in the renovation. The building was one of the original ticket offices and later hauled up the mountain to become the beloved Giuseppe’s. Gone but not forgotten!

Brett Schreckengost is a Colorado based photographer and filmmaker who strives to create unique imagery while following his passion for adventure, travel, and dramatic landscapes. Over the past 30 years, his photography and cinematography work, which has included editorial and commercial content for magazines and outdoor lifestyle brands, has spanned the globe.

“I believe that landscape photography has the power to increase awareness of the world around us and remind us of the importance of preserving and protecting it.”
