Artist Marketa Sivek's journey started in a small town in communist Czechoslovakia during the Cold War, where the constant presence of never-ending propaganda and fear made it challenging to find freedom in creating or even to understand what it means to create freely.
The narrative of Sivek’s multifaceted work is deeply rooted in her childhood. The desire for color, and lots of it, tells a story. In Sivek’s abstract works, sensational pools of color, raw and thick - some mixed directly onto the canvas - command immediacy and often instigate the urge for a nearly edible experience.
Sivek lives in Chicago with her wife, where she has been working for over 20 years. This show marks the artist's fourth year showing at Slate Gray Gallery.
